today was stressful for non-poker related reasons. the one sng i played was interrupted by family yelling at me for something or another. so i decided if i couldn't play my A game, i wouldnt play any more. so what did i do? i went out and played a live game with friends. rebought, but i ended up taking 2nd, for a 5$ profit. could have taken 1st if i wasnt out of it though. oh well. probably going to take a couple day break from poker, unless i wake up tomorrow super-energized. not really sure what im going to do with my time though

today was an interesting day. for a while now ive had a sort of mental roadblock against playing on weekends. my logic was that all the online pros play more on weekends and late nights, because thats when theyre not working or some such. so i guess i kinda went in to the first sng kinda expecting not to do well. and i didnt. maybe it was the bad run of cards i got, the early chip leaders dominating the table, or just some sub-par play caused by my negative expectations, but that one didnt end up paying out. iirc, i got popped 2 away from the bubble with a small stack annnd k7 on a board of k53 where one of the tall stacks was playing 53.

so then i manned up, put my excuses in the bottom drawer, and played some legit poker. resulting in sngs #2+3, both of which i stole 1st place in.

good times.

not long ago, i was super happy that i had gotten out of the red for this buy in, and now ive more than doubled it. i dont even know how far this is going to go now.

Today I got one of those little messages advertising FTP's Rush poker, and so I figured that at 25$ for 50ftp, I could probably manage it without too much hassle, so long as I kept my play tight. At first it was going quite well, and I was up a few dollars after earning like 15ftp or so, but then I came back an hour later and got cold decked/played badly, losing about 10$$ from where i was. An hour later yet, I came back, tightened up my play some more, and eventually got the bonus. so even though it was a generally losing session, I still made some pretty nice profit for my br.

my thoughts on rush poker - im uncertain. it certainly is much MUCH faster than any other form Ive played. you cant get any reads on opponents, since you're always at a new table, but at the same time, that means they cant get reads on you. Overall, Im sure its possible to be pretty profitable in these games, especially if you multi-table(which would just be insane, mind you, given the speed). To be fair to my parentheticals though, I did see a few people who were listed as having up to 4-6 seats. which is borderline insane, mind you. i dont even think i could click fast enough to make that worthwhile. they would probably even put the korean starcraft pros to shame with their godlike click/minute totals. but anyways, enough about that. point is, if I ever return to rush poker, its after I work heavily on my cash game, which is a little sub par at the moment.

Not sure if im going to play in any SNGs today, just because ive already done some hours of work for that profit I made, but if i do, it'll be here.

Today was a glorious day. For one, IM OUT OF THE RED! :D:D:D:D woooohooooo!!!!

anyways, onto the sng summaries. first one was mediocre, got caught with KK vs QJ early and went busto when the flop showed a Q, i shoved, he called, turn comes a J. oh well, it happens. sng #2 was soooo freaking looonnnngg. on the bubble, i was in a bad position for a while with about 800~ chips, with other stack sizes around 4.5k, 3k, and 2.5k. eventually, i managed to bring it up to about 1.7k, outlasted 4th, busted 3rd, and with a dominating chip stack, i slaughtered 1st about two hands later. but this was after about 45-60 min of bubble play (felt that long at least). very stressful stuff when youre constantly on the verge of getting knocked out of the money, but I will say, winning that sng was the best feeling EVER.

sng #3 was so-so. i played a little too lightly, both in terms of cards, and aggressiveness, and i got punished for it.

sng #4 was pretty dangerous. i was still playing a little too lightly, but after losing 300~ chips, i started tightening up to a solid game again. for a bit near the early-early/mid tourney, all i could think about was that i didnt want to go 1:3 for today, and just break even, so I took myself out of a couple hands, cleared my head, and came back refreshed. mid-late game was a little funny. there were three people on one side of the table, and three on the other, and for the most part, the opposite side only had around ~1k in chips per person. ironically though, the tall stack at the table was playing hyper aggressively, and got punished once by a mid stack, for about half his chips, and then i delivered the coup when my a9 hit top pair on a aqx board. he had k7. eventually, the bubble burst, and i KO'd 3rd place(forgot the hand), and the resulting HU was another battle of endurance, much like sng #2. for the most part, I kept a slight lead, but eventually, it got down to a point where our stacks were exactly even, and in position, i look down to see kjo. so i raise, and the guy shoves all in. before this hand, he had been pretty liberal with his shoves, perhaps pushing maybe 20-25% of his hands, so i kinda suspected that a decent number of his shoves were probably light, maybe K6+, Q7+, etc, so i decided to call. turns out he had TT in this instance, but a K on the flop with no competition from the turn or river sent me rejoicing.

Hopefully from here, it's all uphill, so until tomorrow, farewell, and good luck.

first sng was fine, pulled 2nd. second was pretty terrible, early in tourney, i caught KK utg+1, 4bet a min raiser, late position shoved, min razor folded, i called, villain had AA. didnt kill me then and there, but crippled me, and i lost on a bad beat(forgot what it was)

Third sng was just zomg. when it got down to 4 players, it was slow as shit. there was a tag i was abusing out of a lot of chips preflop, but every once in a while, he just shoved over, and i folded a little back to him. eventually it got down to 3 peeps, and it just got slow as shit. we were each taking turns going up and down, but eventually i busted the tag with ajo vs his 33 when i 2.5bet, he shoved, and i called. 2 hands later, i busted 2nd place person with 68o to his ajo when the board hit tt6, i value bet, he raised, i shoved over, and he called.

almost out of the red. maybe all this hard work and studying has finally been paying off

Third SNG was decent, had a good stack through a lot of it, but only managed 2nd. I know went above my 10%/day thing, but the second SNG pissed me off a bit, so I didn't want to just give in to the tilt. rather, I chose to play another SNG to practice controlling tilt. hopefully this all pays off

Introduction + Day 1

I'm a decent poker player, and though I've seen more success in live games than online, I've been playing a lot online due to the convenience of being able to play at any hour.   Unfortunately, though I've been able to win a fair portion of the SNGs I do, it hasn't been enough to break even, and my net is in the red.  Not grotesquely so, but enough for me to finally decided to dedicate myself to becoming a better player.

In the past, I've spent lots of time reading though poker strategy books, and browsing online for more ideas, but in the end, I kept losing money.  So that's what brings me here today.  I'm starting off new, and with a plan.  This blog will keep track of my (hopefully) success.

-------------------------
So this is the plan -

I'm starting out on Fulltilt with 15x buyin for the $2+.25 games I do = $33.75
Each day, I will risk no more than ~10% of my BR, so as to keep me sane = ~$3.37

Day 1)
I'm feeling pretty positive about this.  I think part of my problem before was that I kept buying in for only $10, the min deposit on fulltilt.  The problem was that it kept me in a losing mentality.  To start, I only had just over 4 buy-ins, and if you're reading this, I'm sure you know how painful the variance in poker can be.

Summary-
Starting BR - $33.75
2 $2+.25 9max SNGs
Finishes - 1 loss, one 1st.
Loss - $4.50
Gain - $9
Final BR - $38.25 (net gain of $4.50)

The first SNG was terrible.  I tied for last in what was a pretty bad beat.

BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets t460, CO raises to t1250 (All-In), 2 folds, Hero calls t790

Turn: (t3175) 2 (3 players, 2 all-in)

Results:

Hero had A, K (one pair, Aces).
MP3 had 8, 9 (one pair, eights).
CO had 8, A (two pair, Aces and eights).

Outcome: CO won t3175

After that, I was pretty much bust, having only 45 chips left, so I didn't cash.  Looking back on it though, I was about 87% to win on the flop, and so even having taken that beat, I knew that I made the right call, and I moved forward to the next SNG, trying to stay off tilt.

In the second tourney, I had a bad beat against someone else, JA vs KK with J on the flop, and ended up catching a J on the turn, so I lucked out.  But like I said, I'm trying to make this a serious attempt at creating a solid bankroll, so I kept in mind that though the first bad beat was the right decision that gave bad consequences, and the second was a wrong decision that gave good results, I'm not letting confirmation bias rule my play.

Overall, I'm quite happy with today's results.  Even though it wasn't perfect, I still made profit.  Now I just need to keep it up.
